Cornices

A cornice is a horizontally protruding architectural detail whose functional purpose is to protect the parts of the building below from the harmful effects of precipitation.

The cornice also has an aesthetic purpose so along with other types of façade decor it contributes the architectural appearance of the building. The appearance of the cornice is largely influenced by its profile, which can be quite complex, combining protruding and recessed elements.
